Following a banner weekend of live shows at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City and The Cotillion in Wichita, Danielle Nicole treats us to a world premiere of her latest single, “How Did We Get To Goodbye.”

It's the second track from her highly anticipated third studio album, “The Love You Bleed," due out Friday, Jan. 26 via Forty Below Records. The 12-track effort, which follows up 2018's Grammy-nominated “Cry No More," shows the KC-based singer, songwriter and bassist at her strongest and most impassioned. Whereas the previous effort was about reclaiming control over one's life and highlighted Danielle's ability to bend the blues to her will, the new record brims with love, in all of its possibilities.

In a recent Bridge interview, Danielle discussed the album's release, which comes more than five years after “Cry No More.” Recorded at Weights and Measures Soundlab in Kansas City, tracking began in early 2020. In that time, Danielle lived through a global pandemic, the loss of her brother and Trampled Under Foot bandmate Kris Schnebelen, and marrying her musical partner and guitarist Brandon Miller.

“I didn't want to rush [the release] because I wanted to be able to come into this wholeheartedly and celebrate this album because – another thing about the songwriting – it comes from a more positive place,” she said. “There's not a lot of sad songs about the loss of love; it's more about celebrating the life of love. I wanted to be able to move on and have that closure and not feel guilty about it.”

Though the lyrical content of “Goodbye” is about leaving the past behind, the music charts a triumphant tapestry that merges within the album's greater context of love. While Danielle wrote and co-produced all of the songs, she attributes much of the exciting musical twists and turns to Miller's skills as an instrumentalist and arranger.

“It's a contemporary blues [song] up until you hit the bridge and that solo," she said of the single. “Then it just takes a whole other turn, but you didn't fall off the ride. You're still there, but you're kind of holding on… [Brandon] really brought some cool perspective to the record.”

“How Did We Get To Goodbye" officially drops this Friday, Dec. 1. Pre-save the song at the link.
