For many musicians, performing on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series is a benchmark of achievement. Bob Boilen’s famous desk has been the site of more than 500 performances over the past nine years, ranging from T-Pain (the series’ most-watched concert, at nearly 10 million views) to Adele to The Pixies.
But it’s not just household names — the series continues to showcase up-and-coming artists, including KC’s own Making Movies (pictured above) in 2014 and Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear in 2015. Boilen and company opened up the playing field at the beginning of 2015, allowing any musician to submit a video for the coveted chance to perform at the desk (and play an NPR-sponsored tour). This year’s contest garnered more than 6000 entries.
Yesterday, New Orleans’ Tank and the Bangas was crowned the 2017 champion, with its uncontainable energy and a potent combination of R&B, hip-hop, funk and jazz. Check out the winning video below, and see a few entries from KC-area musicians.
